Clean water is essential to life and health, yet almost a billion people lack access to this basic necessity. Climate change, urbanization, as well as industrial and agricultural practices are all putting growing pressure on fresh water systems. In many countries it is the most marginalized who are at greatest risk of experiencing water scarcity.
Around the globe, a new generation is devising creative solutions to the problem of inadequate access to water. Hosted by the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights and with support from Canada’s International Development Research Centre, water experts from all over the world gathered at the Global Youth Assembly in Edmonton, Canada, in July 2011. They brought dispatches from a changing planet, and shared innovative solutions and inspiration.
These are three of their stories.
